January MMMBA ride "enhanced" with melting snow and high river levels
Fantastic turnout for January MMMBA group ride! The river trail was significantly “enhanced” but that added some enjoyable adventure to the ride! Thanks for coming out and thanks to Laura Delgado for organizing this ride.
Burchfield Park: Winter Bike Closure
The winter closure at Burchfield Park is coming up. If weather cooperates it'll be open until EOD 12/15 and then closed to bikes until notice is posted in the spring. That means no bikes in the park on any of the trails and that includes the 2-track, singletrack, hiking trails, etc. even if you think conditions are okay. Ingham County Parks asks for your cooperation and observation of the winter closure. Thanks.
Global Fat Bike Day 2023
Lack of snow didn't stop well over 250 riders of all ages from enjoying a fantastic (if slightly muddy) day at Sleepy Hollow State Park. Make plans now to be there next year.
Thanks to the many business and individual sponsors who supported this event. Shout out to EPIC Mountain Bike, Sleepy Hollow State Park, Denny's Central Park Bicycles, Eric's Cycle & Fitness, Trek Bicycle Grand Ledge, Adventure Team Lansing Area, SPIN Bicycle Shop at the island, and all of the volunteers and event organizers who made another fantastic GFBD possible. Who's ready for 2024, it'll be on Dec. 7, 2024.
Dirt School at Burchfield County Park receives mParks Design Award
This entire project is one of partnerships and wouldn’t have been possible without those. A willingness to try something new resulted in a fantastic outcome. The MMMBA has partnered with Ingham County Parks for nearly thirty years developing a robust mountain bike trail network during that time. The MMMBA provides maintenance, regular trail inspections and works with the park to improve the trails.
Funding sources were also one of partnerships. The primary funding source for this $200,000 project was from a Capital Region Community Foundation IMPACT grant. This grant proposal was jointly prepared by ICP and the Mid-Michigan Mountain Biking Association (MMMBA). We were awarded a $67,000 matching grant. The match was successfully raised and leveraged with $25,000 in funding provided by Ingham County Parks. $7,000 from the MMMBA, a $5,000 grant from the DALMAC Fund, a $2,000 grant from the League of Michigan Bicyclists along with generous donations from private and business donors. The overall budget and funding includes a budget for future maintenance and repairs. The Capital Region Community Foundation had never funded a project of this type. Another unique collaboration of this project is that it brought together three major stakeholders in recreation and expanded the reach of Dirt School as soon as it was completed. In addition to ICP and MMMBA, the third stakeholder was Capital Youth Cycling (CYC).* Dirt School has provided a space for the growing Capital Youth Cycling’s programs for kids 5-17.
